Unite Here Local 11 Pushes for L.A. Olympic Meltdown
Leave it to Unite Here Local 11 to try to ruin a good time….
If it wasn’t enough to disturb residents and tourists with loud early morning protests, Local 11 is now looking to ruin the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
In its latest attempt to destroy the Los Angeles tourism industry – and possibly the Olympics – Unite Here Local 11 seeks to increase the Los Angeles minimum wage for hotel and airport workers to $30 by July 1, 2028. That would be right as the Olympics are set to kick off.
Los Angeles Councilmember Traci Park admitted, “People are going to lose their job if we do this as currently proposed.”
The Los Angeles executive director of the City Tourism Department Doane Liu issued a similar warning, claiming the proposed minimum wage increase would have impacts on hotel room rates and lead to “unintended consequences.” Liu stated hotels would have to increase rates or back off of staff and services.
After the wage increase was tabled, Unite Here Local 11 leader Kurt Petersen lambasted the city council and claimed that they had “been swayed by pressure from the tourism industry.”
Unite Here Local 11’s push for a minimum wage of $30 also goes against the wishes of California voters who rejected increasing the state minimum wage to $18 just a few weeks ago.
Despite the calamitous impact the proposal could have on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, Kurt Petersen said, “L.A. should be loud and proud about doing this.”
If the union has made anything clear recently, it’s that it will be every bit as “loud and proud” as possible on its march to hurt Los Angeles city workers and damage the tourism industry.
